Google Gemini challenges ChatGPT with new 'Scheduled Actions' feature

Back in January, OpenAI announced the ability for users to schedule tasks in ChatGPT. With scheduled tasks, users can set up ChatGPT to run automated prompts and proactively notify them on a scheduled basis. ChatGPT tasks are currently supported by the o3 and o4-mini models and are available on ChatGPT Web, iOS, Android, and macOS.

For example, users can set up tasks like, “Can you send me a briefing on tech industry news each morning at 8 AM?” or “Remind me on June 10th about my friend's birthday.”

Today, Google announced a similar feature for Gemini users, called scheduled actions. This feature works much like ChatGPT tasks. To set up a scheduled action, users can simply ask Gemini to perform a task at a specific time using either text prompts or voice input. Gemini also supports recurring actions. If needed, users can manage their scheduled actions within the settings page.

This new scheduled actions feature is available to users on Gemini paid plans, including Google AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions, as well as Google Workspace business and education plans.

ChatGPT currently has a limit of 10 active tasks at a time. Unfortunately, Google has not yet disclosed any limitations for Gemini's scheduled actions. If users reach the task limit in ChatGPT, they can pause or delete an existing task to create a new one. Hopefully, Google will offer similar task management options for Gemini users.

As these scheduled task features continue to evolve, they are poised to further solidify the role of AI assistants in managing users' daily workflows.
